Philosopher and poet George Santayana said, “Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds” and Einstein is quoted “the mind that created the problem is not the same mind that will solve the problem”. Sometimes we are overwhelmed by situations or complexities in which we see no rhyme, no reason, and no solution. What we need is not necessarily to fight against the chaos but to seek the order in it.
We all see chaos at times, to be sure, but more important, are we are able to see what the root issues and problems are that are causing what appears, for all intents and purposes, to be chaos. Why can’t business owners? They are, simply, too close. That’s all; they are not wrong, out of touch, stupid, incompetent…or any of the other adjectives that float around in managements’ heads as they consider the need of asking for help. Instead, it is like being a parent. They are the undisputed expert on their child – but are they really the best one to always see him objectively? Say he’s acting out in school, the parent may have no idea what is going on; the child is acting like, well, like chaos. It’s not that they’ve failed or that other people know the child better; it’s precisely that they don’t know the child personally and on the same level that they can often be more helpful.
Finding the help to identify issues affecting both short and long-term success, as well as implement plans to address them, not to criticize, blame, or find fault, is a specific business need. When I am invited into a business, I don’t assume I know more…because I don’t. I don’t know what makes your unique business tick – yet. But I will come to learn, and I will bring decades of experience with me to develop solutions for your unique needs. It really is all about perspective; I can be objective and honest because I don’t have blinders on. I am, however, invested in your success.
Your business is your child; there is no doubt about it. I’m not there to criticize your parenting, but to help support you so you can raise a terrific kid.
